Corneal topography has not only furthered our understanding of disease processes of the cornea, it has also laid the foundation for refractive surgery patient selection, therapeutic refractive surgery for the rehabilitation of excimer laser complications, and intraocular lens calculations. In addition, with the adjunctive use of corneal and wavefront aberrometry, patients who may have experienced post-refractive surgery complications such as decentered ablations, and irregular astigmatism may be able to undergo topography-guided corneal ablation in order to restore functional vision. Finally, the midst of a transformation of cataract surgery to refractive cataract surgery; successful refractive cataract surgery mandates close attention to corneal shape, especially in the setting of “premium” intraocular lenses, and therefore corneal topography is quickly becoming an indispensable tool for the cataract surgeon as well. As corneal topography technologies progress, we will have better tools for the analysis of the true post-refractive surgery corneal power, and this will allow for more precise intraocular lens calculations in those patients who have previously undergone corneal refractive surgery, and now require cataract surgery. In the pages that follow, Professor Amar Agarwal and his co-editors present the second edition of their widely popular text “Corneal Topography.” They have once again gathered together internationally-renowned experts in the field of cataract and refractive surgery to explore the latest nuances in corneal topographic analysis and wavefront aberrometry. The reader will certainly find valuable, practical information within this text, and that it will help to strengthen the critical foundation for the clinical practice of refractive surgery.
